Finding a Successful Food Service Niche for Your Entrepreneurial Venture
Without the right food service niche for your restaurant you may not survive the first year. As you begin planning for your restaurant business you'll want to decide what market of the food industry you want to target. Although all restaurants focus on one thing, food, there are many differences between the various food service niches. Before you make your decision there are some basic concepts that you'll want to consider:
Are you an early morning person or do you prefer the evening hours? If you enjoy being awake during the morning rather than late at night you might want to consider restaurant styles that are open during the morning and day hours such as a café or a bakery-style restaurant. If you prefer the evening hours for working then you would be better suited to a fine dining type of restaurant.
Ask yourself how much you enjoy working with the public. If you enjoy interacting with people you might want to carve your restaurant niche around fine dining so that you can mingle with your customers. If you prefer the kitchen where all the behind-the-scenes action is you might be better suited to own your own fast food restaurant.
Do you enjoy one type of cuisine over another? If you love Italian food you might be best suited to open an Italian restaurant instead of one that focuses on food that holds little interest for you.
It's important that you take some time to fully develop your niche and the concept that you want to present to the world with your restaurant. For example, on food niche that is gaining popularity is the low-carb concept. These days many people are eating the low-carb way to lose weight and to maintain a healthy lifestyle. That doesn't mean that these people can never eat out again. Low-carb restaurants are industry niches that are becoming more and more profitable.
April Y. Pennington wrote in May 2004 for Entrepreneur magazine:
"The timing is still ripe for entrepreneurial newcomers, as The Valen Group, a strategy consulting firm for Fortune 500 companies, discovered in a recent study. According to the survey, 59 million U.S. adults are controlling their intake of carbohydrates, and more than 40 million others said they were considering a low-carb diet in the next 12 months. Collectively, those figures are fast approaching half of all U.S. adults."
Finding your restaurant niche ahead of time can make the difference between success and failure. If you choose a particular type of restaurant style for yourself, and find that you don't fit into the niche, it may be too late for you to turn the market around for yourself by making changes. Many restaurants fail because their owners are unable to (1) adapt to the particular segment of the restaurant industry, or (2) the niche that they have chosen isn't popular among consumers in their chosen area. By doing a market survey ahead of time, and being honest with yourself about what type of restaurant you want to own, you can avoid failure when it comes to your chosen food service niche.
