Secrets of Restaurant Business Success

Getting Started with a Food Franchise

Looking for the secrets to make your restaurant business a success? There are many strategies and secrets that people who have in the food industry for along time are aware of when it comes to success and profits. The key is knowing how to implement these secrets into your own restaurant business.

Anna Buss offers this secret for success about Sheila McCann, the founder and owner of House of Bread:

"Being tenacious was one of the strategies McCann used to break into the business. Her advice for startups? "Don't give up. Be persistent," she says. Also, having the best tasting products with the most expensive ingredients allows her to charge more. "You have to compete on the quality, because [big businesses] can't mass-produce [that]," says McCann. "That's what sets us apart."

Running a successful restaurant business is often a series of learning exercises. What works for one restaurant may not work for another. It's important that you gather a variety of secrets and strategies into your arsenal so that you can try whatever it takes to make your restaurant a huge success.

Following are some business strategies that you should take into consideration for your new business:

  • Guidance and advice. Contact a lawyer and an accountant to get the advice that you need when it comes to the restaurant business.
  • Business plan. Have a solid business plan and cash flow plan in place for the first year of your business operation.
  • Be flexible. Take a look each month at the way you're operating your restaurant as well as how it is profiting. Be prepared to make changes if you have to.
  • Compartmentalize the centers of your restaurants profit. Maintain separate records and control over the various areas of your restaurant. This can include inventory, receiving, food costs, portions, employees, and restaurant design.
  • Learn who your customers are. The more in tune you are with who comes to your restaurant and why the more successful you'll be.

There are some plans that you have should have in place long before your business opens to ensure its success. One year to nine months before the opening date you should be refining all your ideas such as what type of restaurant you're going to run. From nine months to six months before the opening date you should be finding out what your target market is as well as begin writing your business plan. From six months to four months before the opening date you will need to finalize your menu and the name of your restaurant. During the four month to two month countdown you'll need to have your marketing plan finalized as well as make sure your cash flow is in place. One month before you open the doors of your restaurant you should have your staff hired and trained and have a dry run through of the restaurant operations.

Todd Graves, founder and CEO of Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers, has this to say about the success of his fast food restaurant:

"Make sure you love the restaurant business. This business is hard work, and you have to love it to be successful. Also, you have to have passion for your organization and a great culture. Anyone can copy another restaurant concept. It happens all the time, but your passion and culture are what set you apart for your crew and customers."

Good luck finding the perfect food franchise opportunity!
