7 Questions to Ask if You Have What It Takes to be in Business For Yourself
Do you have the right qualities to make your own business succeed? There are plenty of reasons why you might want to own your own business. These reasons include (1) so that you have more freedom about what you do, how much money you make, and how much time you spend working, (2) you have the opportunity to make more money, and (3) you make a job for yourself in a market where jobs may no longer exist. Following are some of the questions you need to ask before you decide to go into business for yourself.
Do you have definite goals that you want to achieve by owning your own business? You need to sit down and list your goals and dreams on paper so that you can see if they are realistic and feasible.
Do you have the stamina to work long hours to get your business started? You'll need to put in some long hours during the startup process of any new business.
Are you prepared to put your own money on the line when it comes to the startup costs of a new business?
Do you have a strong support system of friends and family to help support you whether your business is doing well or poorly? If you're out a limb by yourself without the support of others you may have a harder time staying motivated and positive about your self-employment venture.
Do you have all the skills that you need to run your own business? If you're missing some basic skills, such as restaurant experience, how do you plan to make up for this lack of expertise?
How much business experience do you have? You may have a business education but applying what you know to what is reality often comes as a surprise to many new entrepreneurs.
Are you completely prepared to deal with the risks of owning your own business? During the first year of any new business you'll find that your startup costs far outweigh your profits. You need to be prepared to support yourself on no income for a determined period of time.
How you answer the above questions will play a big role in the success or the failure of your new business. It's important that you're honest and upfront with yourself so that you know exactly what you want and how you want to accomplish it.
Leanne Beattie, a free-lance expert in business franchises, says:
"Both business owners and franchisees need to make logical decisions, without any emotional interference getting in the way. This means that you've got to be capable of handling a financial crisis without panicking or dealing with a late order without flying off the handle in anger. Your emotions have to stay on an even keel at all times - if you act without thinking first, this impetuousness can cause your business to face real difficulties, while shouting at the staff in anger will alienate both clients and staff. Any type of emotional outburst could cost you a lot in lost respect and diminished sales."
Find out if you have what it takes to be in business for yourself before you take the beginning steps of being your own boss.
