How to Choose the Right Restaurant Business
Finding the right type of restaurant business style for you is crucial if you want to succeed in the food industry. If you're thinking about starting a restaurant business you'll have to decide what type of restaurant style is right for you. There are three main categories that restaurants fall into: (1) upscale restaurants, (2) mid-scale restaurants, and (3) quick service restaurants (also known as fast food restaurants). The style of business that you choose will be dependent on your own personal preferences, your previous experience, and your long term goals. No matter what type of business that you choose for yourself you can be assured that you'll be joining a growing industry in North America that promises to become even more profitable over the next few years.
On October 26, 2004, Entrepreneur Magazine predicted "By 2010, it's projected that the restaurant industry will operate more than 1 million units, with sales of $577 billion that capture 53 percent of the consumer food dollar."
Restaurants that are considered to be upscale will provide customers with table service and fine dining. This type of restaurant is considerably more difficult to manage than other business styles because of the intensity of the focus on excellent service and exceptional food. A restaurant is called mid-scale if it takes up the slack between a fast food restaurant and one that is upscale. Meals will be moderately priced and the focus is on providing customers with good food at great prices. A fast food restaurant needs little explanation, serving everything from hamburgers to pizza to fish and chips. You can buy a fast food franchise
Once you determine what restaurant style you want for your new business you'll have to decide on a food concept. Some of the food concepts that you can choose from include:
Family restaurants. This type of restaurant generally serves families in a comfortable and homey atmosphere. The food at a family restaurant will cater to seniors, adults, teens, and children.
Causal dining. Casual dining restaurants cater to a wide variety of people so that there is something for everyone. If you decide to open this type of restaurant your focus will be casual dining in a comfortable environment.
Steakhouse restaurants. This type of restaurant can be either upscale or mid-scale. The food focus is one serving quality cuts of meat and quality meals.
Seafood restaurants. This type of business will focus on the preparation of fish and seafood. This type of restaurant is often dependent on the season,
Ethnic restaurants. An ethnic restaurant is one of the most popular types of businesses in North America and can include Mexican, Chinese, Italian, and many others.
Whatever style of restaurant business you choose to work within it's important that you love what you do. Todd Graves, the founder and CEO of Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers says:
"Make sure you love the restaurant business. This business is hard work, and you have to love it to be successful," Graves says. "Also, you have to have passion for your organization and a great culture. Anyone can copy another restaurant concept. It happens all the time, but your passion and culture are what set you apart for your crew and customers."
