7 Ways to Assess Your Suitability for Running a Franchise
Is franchising for you?? This is a question that you need to ask yourself before you take the plunge and buy a franchise business. It takes a specific person with a certain personality to run a franchise business successfully. The more that you know about your own personality and business potential the better informed you'll be before you decide if a franchise is right for you.
The big question that you need to ask yourself is "am I franchise material"? You need to know for sure that you have what it takes to run a franchise with success. Many franchises fail because owners failed to take into account that they really don't like working long hours or that they don't easily take direction from someone else. You also need to be sure that you're going to like what you're doing! Some of the assessments that you need to make include:
Are you capable of being self-employed? Self-employment takes a great deal of self discipline that you need to have so that you get the job done when it needs to be done.
Do you have entrepreneur qualities? You need to be able to have some business sense either by training or in a natural sense.
Are you responsible enough to run your own franchise business? Owning a franchise comes with many responsibilities that only you, as the owner, will be responsible for.
Are you willing to work long, hard hours? Owning your own business means that you have to be willing to put in the hours until the work is done….and then some!
Are you willing to follow the rules and regulations that will be outlined by the franchisor? Although the franchise may be yours, you will still have to play by their rules and live up to their standards.
Can you successfully handle money? It's important that you know how to handle money. You'll need to maintain the books and make sure that suppliers and employees are paid on time.
Do you like working with people? You'll be dealing with customers on a daily basis. Are you prepared to keep that smile on your face?
Hyatt Lassaline, an online business solutions website, sums it up:
"You might be attracted to the idea of franchising if you have a successful business and a unique business concept. Franchising could allow you to expand faster and at less expense than opening another branch of your own. In one respect, a franchise allows you to expand using someone else's investment capital.
The downside is that you will get a lower return from a franchise than from a branch operation. However, you can open a lot more franchises than branches, so your net return may eventually be greater. You will also run a lower financial risk, since this falls more directly on the franchisee."
Although a owning your own franchise may seem like a great business adventure, you need to be absolutely sure that you're right for experience before you spend money for the startup costs.
