Evaluate the Advantages and Disadvantages of Franchising
Knowing the advantages and disadvantages of franchising can make the difference between the success and the failure of your business. The more that you know about operating a franchise business the better able you'll be able to make decisions that can help you decide if a franchise is right for you.
There are some positive advantages to owning a business franchise:
Consistency of quality. Franchises have a proven record because they offer consumers consistency in the way the food looks and tastes, in the service, and in the way the franchise operates.
Established success. A franchise will often already come with a solid consumer base as well as accounts across the nation.
Franchise support. When you buy a franchise you'll receive the support and training that you need to operate the business successfully. This includes manuals on how to operate the business, help in choosing a location for the franchise, and the way the restaurant is designed. This means that you can focus totally on the day to day running of the business.
Continued support. Even after you're new franchise is in operation, you can count on the continued support of the franchise. This includes more training, assistance in running the accounting aspects of the business, and help with monthly promotions.
Continued franchise updating. When you own your own franchise you can count on being part of continued updating of products as well as the style of the franchise.
As well as advantages there are some disadvantages that you'll need to keep in mind before you decide if owning a franchise is right for you:
Startup costs. There are some franchises that have very high startup costs. In fact, some of these startup costs can be much more than the cost of opening up your own restaurant.
Royalty payments. Each month part of the profit that you earn will have to go back to the franchise. This can significantly reduce your profit margin.
Advertising and marketing costs. A franchise will provide you with all the help you need when it comes to advertising and marketing, however you'll most likely have to pay a fee for this support. You should also keep in mind that the contract you sign may give you very little flexibility when it comes to making any changes to the products that you sell.
Designated supplier list. Many franchises insist that you only buy your supplies and inventory from a provided list of suppliers. This means that you won't be able to buy your inventory from suppliers that you know will offer you a lower price.
Long term contracts. Many franchises come with long term contracts. This means that you want to sell your business you may face some steep penalty charges.
Franchise reputation. The success of your business will be dependant on the success of the franchise. If the franchise business has any problems among consumers this reputation will be passed on to you.
No guarantee of success. As with any business that you open, there is no guarantee of success with any franchise business.
- >Risk. Any new business comes with a high risk factor that you need to be prepared to make.
Before you determine whether you want to be part of a franchise business you need to fully understand the advantages and disadvantages of how a franchise operates.
