How to Budget for Success

Food Franchise Finance

The success of your business is all in the budgeting! It's crucial that you learn to budget carefully so that you succeed in the restaurant business. If you don't know exactly how much you need to spend, and where you need to spend it, you may find yourself over budgeting or under budgeting each month. This can lead to a serious drain of your funds, especially during the first crucial year that your business is in operation. There are many areas in the restaurant business that are including in budgeting:

  • Food costs. Find out exactly what your food costs are for the type of food that you're serving.
  • Employee pay. The cost of paying your employees can be a large portion of your budget. But keep in mind that good service, and well paid employees, can often make the difference between a restaurant that has great service to one that is failing in the service area.
  • Advertising. No matter what type of a restaurant you have, you'll need to advertise in some way so that you can reach your consumer market. Advertising can be as expensive as television or as cheap as flyers that are distributed in the area where your restaurant is located.
  • Marketing. The more time and effort that you spend marketing your restaurant the more successful you'll be.

Budgeting for marketing is one area of the restaurant business that is the hardest to pinpoint. This is because you can't anticipate ahead of time what will happen. You may want to come up with more than one budget scenario so that you learn to take all aspects into account. As you grow more experienced, and the longer that your restaurant is in business, the better you'll be at budgeting successfully.

Preparing your budget each month can make the difference between you going over budget and reducing your profit, or coming in on or under budget and reaping the benefits.

A business plan that is solid and sound can help you stay within the guidelines of your budget. Regularly update and review your business plan so that you can make any additions or subtractions to your overall game plan. The more adaptable and flexible you are the easier it will be for you be prepared for anything that comes along in the restaurant business. Entrepreneur Magazine says:

"Your business plan should include: a clear definition of your concept; a description of your market; your menu and pricing; detailed financial information, including data on your startup capital (amount and sources) and your long-term income and expense forecasts; a marketing plan; employee hiring, training and retention programs; and detailed plans that outline how you'll deal with the challenges restaurateurs face every day. Including an exit plan in your strategy is also a good idea."

Budgeting each and every month allows you to modify your game plan at the end of each month so that you can increase your profits in the next month and achieve continued success.

Good luck finding the perfect food franchise opportunity!
